Why People Think Your Work Sounds Cool But Don’t Think They Need It

Ever find that when you tell people what you do when networking or DMing, they almost always answer, “Oh, that’s so awesome – so needed!” or “I bet a lot of people are interested in that!” ?

But they very rarely say, “That’s me! I need your help! How can I work with you?”

Annoying, isn’t it? Everyone says/thinks what you do is needed, but (almost) no one admits to actually being the one who needs it. 😉

This phenomenon was actually mentioned in several different conversations that I had with coaches and healers just this afternoon (at different times) – which is quite coincidental and definitely stood out, so I figured I was meant to write about it.

The bottom line is this:

Don’t make this mean that there isn’t a market for what you do.

Don’t even make it mean that the words you’re using to describe what you do aren’t compelling.

Either one or both of those things COULD be true…

…but when the responses of “that’s great, I’m sure people need that” are nearly 100% and the “I need this personally!” are nearly zero, I think something else is going on.

Just stop and think about your own behavior, and I’ll think about mine.

I think I have absolutely never said “that’s me, I need this” when someone I just met told me what they do.

Even if I probably need that type of help and have been thinking about it.

Why not?

Because I need to know more than just the elevator pitch of what someone does (i.e. the outcome they provide) to truly know that I need what they’re offering.

For one thing, I need to decide if I believe they can actually provide that outcome. (Are they experienced and good at what they do? Do they have results? If yes, am I a good fit to get those results? etc.)

I also need to know HOW they provide the outcome. And, once I know that, I need to decide if that “how” (method) is something that aligns with me, that will fit well with who I am and how I like to do things.

I also need to decide some personal things on my end, like whether now is the right time for me to work on this outcome, whether now’s the best time for me to spend the money, and so forth.

We all probably know instinctively that if we sound even remotely interested in having someone’s help, we will give them hope that we might become a client.

And we’ll almost certainly get added to their sales system or follow-up list to receive future messages or emails such as “Have you thought more about working together?” “What questions do you have?” “Tell me about your challenges!”

All before we really know if they’re the real deal or if we vibe with them.

Which means we’ll feel really bad if we later end up having to tell them “no” or ghost them when it becomes apparent that they’re not the person we want to hire (or when their follow-ups get annoying).

I can foresee all of this the second I feel a glimmer of interest in what someone does, so my guard is up during these meet-and-greet conversations and I don’t want to give any indication that I am personally interested, so that I stay under the radar and avoid potentially disappointing them later.

I don’t even have conscious/explicit thoughts about this every time, but I know that’s what’s going on underneath and probably is why I instinctively tend to stay vague with my replies and not mention that I relate to what they’re saying.

There’s also a basic element of trust going on here.

I mean, who wants to admit to someone they just met that they struggle with their weight, or with finding love, or with making money in their business, or with staying productive and getting things done?

(or with whatever else an expert or coach or other skilled person is helping with)

Humans are an interesting bunch. You can’t always take their words at face value.

In fact, you OFTEN can’t.

This is why I am such a big fan of detailed essay-style content – not 1:1 conversations with people you just met – as a way to draw in the right people who will hire you for your work.

I’ve been fascinated and floored again and again for the past few years as people I’ve never once talked to or interacted with 1:1 come into my inbox and say they’re interested in hiring me (and then they do hire me – paying without a sales call!) because they not only want help with the thing I solve, but they also totally love the method I use for solving it and feel like it aligns wonderfully with who they are and how they like to do things.

They came to that understanding over time from reading my content.

A “networking” conversation when we’d just met was never – not once – the context for any of these folks’ decisions that they needed what I offered.

And their guard was down when they contacted me because they were already pretty sure that I was the one for them, so they were willing to admit their challenges at that point. This actually makes total sense.

A lot of folks have a hard time believing that content could convince someone like this who’d never had a 1:1 conversation – but that’s because most people don’t write content in as detailed and specific a way as I do!

In fact, most can’t envision what this kind of content would even look like because it is so rare.

(There’s a growing tribe of my past/current clients and followers who are using the method, but they’re still a pretty small number compared to how many comprise our whole industry.)
